By lunchtime, Jarvie was done with the door and the next two. Terina was sitting on a bunk in the third cabin, scowling.

“Is it that unusual not to find anything?” He asked.

“No,” she admitted, “but it would have been fun to keep you interested.”

He smiled. “Doesn’t matter if I’m interested. I have to fix the doors.”

“Tomorrow then. Mom was very stern about being back for lessons. She said I better not distract you from your studies.” They went back up the stairs, collected Jarvie’s tools, and started back, the robots trailing after.

“It’ll be nice to have a classmate anyway,” Jarvie said.

“Jarvie, you’re three years ahead of me.”

“Oh,” he cleared his throat self-consciously. “About that. Didn’t Iricana tell you? We’ll be in the same class. I’ve sort of missed three years of school.”

He expected some mild disapproval from such an obviously educated kid, but when he braved a glance, she was looking up at him with amazed admiration. “Wow, you must have some story to tell.”
